Family Goes to Mortuary for Body — But It Cannot Be Found

A Ghanaian family preparing to bury their 53-year-old relative, Georgina Tsiakie Agbasi, has been left devastated after her body could reportedly not be located at the Battor Catholic Hospital Mortuary Annex at Anyanam in the Ada West District.

According to the family, they arrived at the mortuary on 4 September to collect Georgina's remains for burial—but were told the body could not be found.

Searches were reportedly carried out after three female bodies had recently been released. Yet Georgina's remains were still not located. With mourners already gathered and funeral arrangements in place, the family ultimately proceeded with the funeral and burial ceremony without the body.

How does a body entrusted to a mortuary simply go missing?

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has since investigated the incident. It says preliminary checks identified gaps in some of the mortuary's processes.

Management has now been given 14 days to account for the whereabouts of the body and has reportedly assured the regulator that it will be found.

For the grieving family, however, the promise does little to answer the painful question at the centre of the case: where is Georgina?

The matter remains under investigation. No conclusion has yet been reached about what happened to the remains.
