Akamani case: Court orders wife held as SIU vigil is planned

Betty Akamani will remain in Jackson County Jail after a court denied her release on Monday, 21 September, in the case concerning the death of her husband, Southern Illinois University professor Dr Kofi Akamani. A vigil for him is planned on Tuesday evening.

Local broadcaster KFVS, citing court records and the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, reports that Betty Akamani, 35, faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of endangering the life or health of a child. Her next court date is a preliminary hearing on 6 October. The charges are allegations; she has not been found guilty.

What has been reported about the shooting?

Prosecutors allege that she shot Dr Akamani multiple times while he sat in his car in the driveway of her Murphysboro home. He was taken to a hospital in Carbondale, where he died.
