MESSI’S 100TH INTER MIAMI GOAL DELIVERS ANOTHER CUP

Another final, another trophy, and another Lionel Messi milestone.

Inter Miami defeated Cruz Azul 2–0 on Wednesday night to lift the 2026 Campeones Cup, giving the club its first trophy at Nu Stadium and extending a remarkable run of success since Messi arrived in South Florida.

The headline moment came in the 24th minute. Luis Suárez supplied the ball and Messi, better known for the magic in his left foot, finished with a rare header. It was his 100th goal for Inter Miami, reached in 115 appearances across all competitions.

A full-circle goal against Cruz Azul

There was something fitting about the opponent. Messi’s first Inter Miami goal also came against Cruz Azul in July 2023, when his stoppage-time free kick announced his arrival in American football. More than three years later, the Mexican club was again on the other side of a historic Messi moment.

Cruz Azul did threaten to change the match. Gabriel Fernández struck the post with a header, and Casemiro blocked José Paradela’s effort from the rebound. Inter Miami survived the danger and carried their advantage into the closing stages.

Then Messi shaped the result again. In the 81st minute, his corner found Casemiro, whose header made it 2–0 and put the trophy beyond Cruz Azul’s reach.

Messi remains decisive

Messi did not only score the opening goal. He created the second, controlled the rhythm of the attack and was named the Campeones Cup Most Valuable Player. On a night built around a landmark number, his wider contribution was the strongest reminder that his value cannot be reduced to statistics alone.

The victory also gave new head coach Cristian “Kily” González a trophy in his first match in charge. For Inter Miami, it continued an extraordinary sequence: the club has now won silverware in every season since Messi joined, beginning with the 2023 Leagues Cup, followed by the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, the 2025 MLS Cup and now the 2026 Campeones Cup.

Major League Soccer also drew level with Liga MX in the all-time Campeones Cup record, with four victories each.

Messi’s 49th career trophy

The Campeones Cup marked Messi’s 49th career trophy, extending his extraordinary record as the most decorated player in football history. The milestone places him just one trophy away from reaching 50 senior honours.

Could he reach 50 trophies before retirement? At this rate, that looks entirely possible. The idea of 1,000 career goals is a much more demanding target, and perhaps not the number that best explains this stage of his career.

Messi now appears to be playing with a different kind of freedom. The urgency is still there when the match demands it, but so is the enjoyment: combining with teammates, choosing his moments and continuing to influence finals without looking as though he is chasing every record in sight.

That may be the most impressive part of this latest milestone. The numbers keep finding him, even when the game itself seems to be the main attraction.

For Inter Miami, Wednesday night brought another cup. For Messi, it brought goal number 100 in pink, trophy number 49 and one more reminder that the extraordinary has become routine.
